Images of Peace in Tolkien’s works

In the essay below, Visualising Peace student Albert Surinach I Campos discusses the nuanced ways in which Tolkien visualises peace and conflict across his works, especially in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. He also considers a range of illustrations, artwork and media adaptations of Middle-Earth and how they shift and alter Tolkien’s vision of pacifism and militarism. You can read a separate reflection by Albert on environmentalism and peace/conflict in Tolkien here, and listen to a fascinating podcast interview on Tolkien’s representation of peace and peacebuilding here. He reflects on his learning journey here. As Albert notes, ‘Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and his other works have had a profound impact in the 20th and 21st centuries. While film versions of his books have particularly influenced habits of visualising war, Tolkien’s views on peace have lots of relevance in the modern world.’
